Where to ride near Pagosa Springs

Four hand-picked trailheads from people who actually ride them. Difficulty, parking, and trailer notes for each — so you know what you're hauling into.

Murray's Homestead

Top Pick

Difficulty: Moderate

10-mile loop with 10 water crossings and stunning views. Our hands-down favorite ride for a full day in the saddle.

  • Best in mid-summer once water levels drop
  • Plenty of trailer parking at the trailhead
  • Pack a lunch — you'll want to linger

Poison Park

Advanced

Difficulty: Strenuous

Very vertical terrain — not for horses unaccustomed to climbing. Bumper-pull required for the final 3 miles of road.

Gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness. Big climbs, big rewards, and big views once you top out.

  • 3H gooseneck rigs will not make the final road section
  • Bring water — limited sources on the climb

Piedra River (Upper)

Expert

Difficulty: Technical / Advanced

Technical and advanced riders only. Cliff-side trails and rocky terrain. Tight trailer parking — arrive early.

One of the most dramatic rides in the area. Narrow ledges along the Piedra River make this an unforgettable but serious outing.

  • Confirm your horse is solid on rocky, exposed trails
  • Tight turnaround — back the trailer in if possible

Turkey Springs

Easy

Difficulty: Easy

Easy, forested trails just 5 minutes from town. Perfect for a quick afternoon ride or a confidence-builder for a green horse.

  • Wide parking lot, easy in/out
  • Network of loops — pick your distance
